Africa-Press – Botswana. President Advocate Duma Boko is expected to officially open the 51st Ghanzi Show on Saturday.
In an interview, Ghanzi show committee Chairperson, Mr Mpho Molomo said the event is on its fifth day, since they opened gates on Monday for the public to witness the serenity of livestock exhibitions from 37 livestock exhibitors, and diverse service and products providers by government and parastatals. He mentioned that the current fiscal constraints faced by government nearly affected governments’ efforts in ensuring smooth hosting of the magnificent event, as he said they nearly witnessed a low turnout of government exhibitors.
He however said so far 80 per cent of government exhibitors had arrived and were settling in, giving them hope that the event would now go as planned. Mr Molomo said the exhibitions would afford the exhibitors the opportunity to market and promote their services and products to a larger clientele residing in Ghanzi and neighbouring districts.
“Re itumeletse tshologelo eo, mme e bile go a re nametsa gore ditshupo tsa rona, di tlaa tswelela di tshegeditse serodumo sa yone,” he commented.
For her part, Kgosi Annah Rankho of Ghanzi said the annual event is meant to promote agriculture in the district as well as to eradicate poverty amongst communities within the area. She therefore implored prominent and aspiring farmers to make use of the platform and exchange information on different sectors that they could use to change their traditional methods of farming into commercialisation.
She said Ghanzi show is now a national recognised agricultural event, that attracts larger attendees and therefore implored the community to join hands with the leadership and organising committee to ensure that they promote it to greater heights.
She implored the organising committee to broaden their scope by benchmarking from South Africa and Namibia and others to upscale the event and promote Ghanzi district to maintain its dominance in cattle farming and horticulture as well as the new emerging supporting sectors that she said would significantly contribute to the economic growth of the local communities.
Kgosi Rankho further implored the communities to embrace the recent government launched Economic Transformation Strategy by changing their mindset and adopt new farming technologies that would promote the resuscitation of the ailing agricultural sector. On other issues, she implored women and youth to take lead in promoting the agricultural sectors as she said it would uplift their livelihoods as they are mostly affected groups in the communities.
The agricultural show witnessed a line up of activities such as goat, sheep, cattle exhibitions. Other activities include, Miss Ghanzi Show, livestock auction scheduled for today and the horse race to be held Saturday after the official opening ceremony, and later the prize giving gala dinner on Saturday night. Football matches would be played on Sunday to wrap up the show events. The show is held under the theme, ‘Sowing Seeds of Innovation for Agricultural Transformation’.
