Red Cross and Tlokweng Embark on Clean - up Campaign

Africa-Press – Botswana. Botswana Red Cross Society, in partnership with Tlokweng District Council and residents, has launched a three-day clean-up campaign aimed at promoting a cleaner and healthier environment in the village.

The campaign is expected to mobilise 200 participants per day, including community members, public officers and Red Cross volunteers to foster environmental cleanliness, public health and community awareness. Member of Parliament for Tlokweng, Mr Phenyo Segokgo welcomed the initiative, saying it came at a time when the village was still recovering from the flood experienced earlier this year.

“The flood left behind not only structural damage, but also large amounts of debris and waste that continue to pose serious health risks,” he said.

He emphasised that a clean village created a pleasant living environment, reduced the spread of diseases, boosted community pride and attracted development. He also commended the Botswana Red Cross Society for its continued support to the Tlokweng community.

Botswana Red Cross secretary and chief executive officer, Mr Kutlwano Mukokomani said as part of the clean-up campaign initiative, the organisation would provide 50 wheelie bins, refuse bags, gloves, masks, snacks for participants and human resources, all valued at over P100,000.

“We urge Tlokweng community to take this clean-up campaign as a stepping stone toward broader environmental sustainability practices,” Mr Mukokomane said.

He said the Red Cross remained committed to supporting the community beyond this initiative, particularly in efforts that promoted health and dignity. He said a clean-up campaign aimed to strengthen environmental resilience in the face of increasing disasters and disease outbreaks.

He also highlighted the organisation’s longstanding partnership with the Tlokweng community. He referenced the Tlamelong Rehabilitation Centre in Tlokweng, which offers vocational training, physiotherapy, and community-based rehabilitation services across the country. He also noted that the Red Cross responded swiftly during the recent flood, when trained staff and volunteers were deployed to assist with evacuations, distributed essential relief supplies and provided much-needed psychosocial support.
