Africa-Press – Botswana. The good relations between Botswana and Estonia are yielding positive results as eight Batswana citizens have been granted Estonian e-Residency, President of Estonia Mr Alar Karis said during the Botswana-Estonia Business Forum.
He said the e-Residency of Estonia was a government-issued digital identity, which gave global entrepreneurs remote access to Estonia.
Launched in 2014, e-Residency provides entrepreneurs from around the world with secure digital access to Estonia’s advanced e-services and transparent business environment.
President Karis expressed optimism that the relations between the two countries would deepen owing to the similarities they shared.
“We are hoping for more cooperation primarily in the digital and international security,” he said.
He said the convention for the prevention of double taxation signed by the two countries was an important step forward in that regard.
“Once it comes into effect, it will be easier for our entrepreneurs to work together, make investments and build lasting business relationships,” he said.
In addition, President Karis said there were enormous potential for cooperation in the areas of e-governance, clean technology, education technology and health innovation citing that a number of Estonian companies were already active in Botswana, contributing to the creation of an e-tax system for the country and to the development of cybersecurity solutions.
He also reaffirmed Estonia’s support to Botswana in terms of development of cooperation together with the European Union saying that would contribute to fostering digital skills and boosting start-up ecosystem in Botswana.
