Africa-Press – Botswana. Tebogo Sebego has announced that he will be stepping down as Notwane Football Club president after five years in office.
Giving his remarks on Saturday at the club’s Annual General Meeting in Gaborone, Sebego did not divulge the reasons for his departure from the office he held since 2017 and said he is opening up for ‘fresh ideas’.
“The past five years have been a privilege and I will be taking this moment to step down as president of the team to allow fresh ideas to take our team forward,” he said.
Sebego’s departure has opened up a race for the position. The mother body sporting club is run by the president whilst its subdivisions including Notwane Football Club are run by a chairperson.
He had in his speech noted that the club’s drive for privatisation has so far stalled as there is a ‘duplicate’ registered at the Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS).
“The team formed a company to drive the privatisation resolution. We have encountered a challenge at the BURS in obtaining the registration. It would appear that there is an existing registration, which has been dormant and will need to be resolved with BURS before the current company is registered. The new committee will have to pick this up,” Sebego said.
He also said the club is awaiting a response from the Botswana Football Association after it questioned fellow Premier League rivals, Extension Gunners’ legitimacy to register players in past transfer window periods.
The attendants at the AGM at the Notwane clubhouse learnt that the club is over P200,000 in the red. Notwane, amongst others owe former coaches, Kaelo Kaelo P54,307.70, the late Keitumetse ‘Pio’ Paul P23,968.14, Oupa Kowa P9,000 and Serbian Dragojlo Stanolovic P12,000. Top of the club’s debts is a P66,000 sum owed to Royal Platter Enterprises, which houses some of the team’s players. The club is also yet to settle an P18,522.95 debt owed to former striker, Ishmael Amponsah.
The club’s outgoing secretary-general, Kealeboga Moeng highlighted that the current coaching and playing staff have not been paid their full salaries as per the agreement between them and the club. She said the arrears would need to be settled before the club is taken before the Footballers Union of Botswana and the Labour Office. She said the past season’s wages stands at P301,000.
On the afternoon, the delegates elected a new executive committee. Director Neo Lebetwa ascended to the chairperson role unopposed and he replaces Phillip Tiroyamodimo. Edward Moganana was elected in to vice chairperson position while Ketshabile Lebentlele is the new secretary-general. Mogomotsi ‘Ace’ Orapeleng has retained the public relations officer seat and Gotlhe Rapotsanyane and Teko Kwape are the additional members in the newly elected committee.
