Africa-Press – Botswana. President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has revealed that the Sir Seretse Khama Half Marathon will be upgraded to a full one next year.

He said this during the half marathon awards ceremony in Serowe on Saturday.

Dr Masisi also commended organisers for delivering a successful marathon, which was meant to resuscitate, ignite and revive the commemoration of the Sir Seretse Khama Day.

Meanwhile, 29-year-old Motswana woman, Kefilwe Galeitsewe from Lion’s Den Club and her South African male counterpart, Sibusiso Nzima emerged winners of the Sir Seretse Khama Half Marathon.

The winners, who ran 21.1km race, pocketed P20 000 each.

“Winning this race is a big achievement though it was not easy,” said Galeitsewe in an interview.

She attributed her win to intensive training thanking her coach and fellow athletes at Lion’s Den club for the support they gave her.

Galeitsewe, who scooped position two at Diacore marathon recently, said the route was not flat forcing her to push herself harder to maintain the pace.

“Though I faced a fierce competition from foreign runners in my heart I was the winner,” she said.

Twenty-nine-year-old Nzima was also thrilled to have won the half marathon after recovering from an injury, which forced him to stop running.

“I participated in this marathon to test my fitness and I am happy for my win today,” said Nzima.

He commended Batswana for promoting sports tourism through marathons, adding that Sir Seretse Khama half marathon had the potential to attract tourists from other countries.

He thanked the sponsors of the marathon for successfully organising the event.

Their runners up, Boikhutso Bakha and Abel Chibanda pocketed P15 000 each after coming second in female and male categories respectively whilst Rutendo Nyahora and Lazarus Too won P10 000 each after coming third in both female and male categories respectively.

In the 10km race, Olebogeng Segolame and Medupi Tladi pocketed P10 000 each in the female and male categories respectively.

Winners of the 5km categories pocketed P5 000 each for both male and female categories.

The winners were Botlhe Mazwiduma and Wilson Othusitse in the female and male categories respectively.

Boitumelo Tshotlego won the 10km para female category while the male category was won by Akanyang Golebamang.

Marathon national coordinator, Botshelo Nthaga said the marathon attracted 1 870 runners from Botswana and neighbouring countries.
