Africa-Press – Botswana. Small enterprises have proven to be vital contributors to economic growth, and supporting them was essential for sustainable economic development.

This was said by, Ms Seonyatseng Ramorwalela, a home economics officer for Serowe District Council (SDC) during Small Businesses Market Day held at Serowe Old Mall recently.

She said the council organised market days to support small businesses, describing them as the driving force of the economy by creating jobs, encouraging innovation, and motivation people to start their own ventures, which in turn boosts healthy market competition.

Ms Ramorwalela also pointed out that SDC’s market days that occurred monthly in various villages within the district helped SMMEs display their products, built relationships, developed new markets, and draw in investors.

One of the exhibitors, Ms Malebogo Mokalake (53), a seamstress plying at Serowe Old Mall, said her business greatly benefitted from market days, adding that her business was founded through support from Nyeletso Lehuma programme, which educated her on sewing in 2015. She said that skills acquired enabled her to start her sewing business, which specialised on traditional dikhiba, clothing alterations, school uniforms, and custom items upon request.

“Reaching where I am today was not an easy challenge to overcome; it required patience and commitment to build a sustainable business.

Tailoring is a highly competitive industry, you must always guarantee that all your products meet your client’s satisfaction,” she stated.

Ms Ramorwalela said she consistently ensured her products were showcased during market days, where she created new markets and generated sales.

Additionally, feedback on her work prompted her to refine her skills and use the critiques to perfect her craft.

She urged small business owners to capitalise on the event to showcase their products during free market days, noting that this could lead to countless opportunities for their business expansion and sustainability.

“Take advantage of free market days and leverage the wealth of knowledge available at no cost. Organisations ready to support the development of your products and business are at such events and so are prospective clients, its an endless opportunity that requires no contemplating,” she said.
