Africa-Press – Botswana. The Minister of Child Welfare and Basic Education, Ms Nono Kgafela-Mokoka has noted with dismay the state of Gowa Junior Secondary School in Kauxwi in the Okavango District.
Ms Kgafela-Mokoka made the observation yesterday following a tour of the school during which she saw dilapidated classrooms and hostels, as well as a shortage of furniture. The school operates at a teacher-student ratio of 40 pupils per teacher, while teachers also live under poor conditions.
Ms Kgafela-Mokoka though alive to challenges the school faced, explained that government was working to turn the economy around despite facing financial constraints to address shortages at the moment. She said government embraced public-private-partnership that would help in any form.
The school has an enrolment of 1 138 pupils, 971 of whom are boarding students and 338 day students, according to the school head Mr Steven Morris. It also has 70 teachers of which 11 are temporary, as well as 49 support staff of which 21 are on temporary basis. Mr Morris expressed concern about overstay and lack of progression of some teachers and poor academic performance.
