STRIVE FOR EFFICIENT SERVICE DELIVERY - KWAPE

Africa-Press – Botswana. Public officers have been urged to deliver efficient services to Batswana.

Speaking during a stakeholder consultative meeting in Kanye recently, Dr Kwape, who is also Minister of Foreign Affairs said for services to be delivered effectively and efficiently to Batswana, public officers had to double their efforts.

He however thanked those officers who continued to perform exceptionally well in providing services to the nation.

“Let us treat Batswana equally, with love and respect,” he added.

Dr Kwape explained that people were mostly remembered for the good things they had done hence the need for public officers to go out and deliver on their mandate.

MP Kwape decried the poor workmanship in government projects, noting that a lot of money had been spent on such projects and therefore had to be completed on time and within budget.

He appealed to various government departments to prepare for projects that would be carried out through the Transitional National Development Plan, to ensure smooth commencement up to completion.

Furthermore, he encouraged government departments to award tenders to locals and advised against giving tenders to the same companies.

For his part, the District Commissioner, Mr Mompoloki Mochanang assured the MP that public service was committed to improving service delivery, adding that they intended to change the image of the public service to a positive one.

Regarding the bad state of the roads, he said a resolution was made for central government and council to collaborate in addressing the situation. “When we talk about improvement of rural economy, roads are critical,” he said.

Southern District Council Secretary, Mr Godimo Garegope shared Dr Kwape’s sentiments on some employees’ poor work ethic, noting that they had been conducting trainings in an effort to improve the situation.

Pertaining to concerns raised by some government employees on poor conditions of houses, Mr Garegope attributed that to lack of funds, adding that their maintenance budget was limited.

In an effort to speed up developments, he highlighted the need for local leaders to be empowered to make some decisions, rather than waiting for such decisions to come from Gaborone. Mr Garegope registered his concern of some employees who were paid scare skills allowance, but not registered with any professional body.

Some employees underscored the need for government departments to collaborate, in an effort to effectively and efficiently provide services to the public.

They also decried shortage of staff, noting that it affected service delivery and requested for the process of maintaining government houses to be shortened.
