Africa-Press – Botswana. Lesabokwe Trust is expected to address pressing challenges faced by Tshokwe and Robelela villages, amongst them unemployment and limited economic opportunities.

The registration of the Trust was facilitated by Selebi Phikwe Economic Diversification Unit (SPEDU) which recently handed over the official documents to the two villages. Speaking at the hand over ceremony, SPEDU’s acting director for Strategic Projects, Mr Maiba Samunzala shared that one of organisation’s key responsibilities was to promote the establishment of impactful projects in the Selebi Phikwe region. These, he said included initiatives aimed at economic diversification, job creation, investment opportunities and social upliftment amongst others; hence the facilitation of the registration of the Lesabokwe Trust to achieve these goals.

“This trust should be more than just an entity; it should be a commitment to utilise the resources available within these communities to foster viable, sustainable activities that will enhance economic growth and create jobs,” he stated.

Mr Samunzala emphasised the importance of having appointed trustees from the two villages, relevant stakeholders and the village leadership work together to implement projects that aligned with aspirations of communities. To ensure the effective operation of the Trust, Mr Samunzala highlighted that the appointed members would undergo training to equip them with essential skills in the management of the trust projects governance.

The traditional leaders of both villages said Lesabokwe Trust was a beacon of hope that would provide a structured way to leverage resources and achieve results that would benefit the communities in the villages. Kgosi Segwabe Segwabe of Tshokwe expressed optimism about the Trust, saying it was a crucial platform that could initiate various economic projects. He said he believed the Trust would not only make a difference in addressing unemployment challenges, especially among the youth, but would also lead to developments that would enhance the villages’ landscape.

“I am grateful to SPEDU for recognising the potential of our villages and helping us register the Trust, which turns our aspirations into reality. We have come a long way to finally have this Trust officially registered, and it would be a shame if we fail to nurture it for future generations,” he said.

The headman of arbitration at Robelela, Mr Sekai Mboy, urged communities in both villages to embrace the initiative. He encouraged them work collectively to create an environment that would attract investors. Meanwhile, Lesabokwe Trust is in the process of acquiring over 2 000 hectares of land and arrangements with relevant stakeholders are in progress to secure the acquisition.
