Africa-Press – Botswana. The representative of the United Nations (UN) assured, Friday, that the countries and partner organizations of São Tomé and Príncipe will ensure the necessary funding for the elections in the country, hoping for the best result and that everyone can vote.
“I’ve already talked about meetings with the diplomatic corps, with partners to mobilize the necessary resources for the elections, now we no longer have problems financing the elections”, said Eric Overvest, after a meeting with São Tomé President Carlos Vila Nova .
According to the UN resident coordinator in São Tomé and Príncipe, there is a fund in which “there is a part that is managed directly by the United Nations, mainly for training, civic education activities, but also support from experts in finance matters within the electoral commission” to help with transparency within the National Electoral Commission (CEN).
“I am listening to all political parties and we hope that the whole process goes well, and we also help with the mobilization of financial resources”, said Eric Overvest.
Asked about the protest triggered by the Independent Democratic Action (ADI) and its youth organization and defended by the President of the Republic, demanding the updating of the electoral rolls of around eight thousand new young voters and people who changed their residence since the presidential election last year , the UN representative considered that “it is a national question of the country’s institutions that are within democracy and the rule of law”.
I hear the concerns of the different parties, but the United Nations does not take a position for or against the country’s national deliberations, but I have heard the concerns and we want the best outcome for the country, that everyone can vote in the elections”, added Eric Overvest.
