Africa-Press – Botswana. The national rugby team, the Vultures, faced a daunting challenge this past weekend, suffering defeat of 12-80 against Zimbabwe’s Sables in Harare.
This test match served as a crucial preparation for the Sables as they gear up for the Rugby Africa Cup, a key qualifier for the upcoming 2027 Rugby World Cup. Coach Andrew Paxinos shared his perspectives upon returning from Harare, saying that despite the result, the experience gained from the match was invaluable.
“We lost against the African champions, but it was essential for our development,” he noted.
Paxinos highlighted scoring two tries as a positive takeaway, indicating that the Vultures were able to execute some aspects of their game even against a formidable opponent. Paxinos acknowledged the advanced stage of rugby in Zimbabwe, noting the country’s selection pool of experienced players, contrasting it with the challenges faced by the Vultures. He praised his team for their dedication and hunger to improve, stating, “We need to continue playing this kind of game to elevate our standard of play.”
Looking ahead, Paxinos announced plans for the national team to arrange friendly matches in preparation for the upcoming BOLESWA Rugby Cup in September, with hopes of competing against Zambia and professional rugby clubs in South Africa.
