Africa-Press – Botswana. The World Bank will support the African Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) with US$100 million to strengthen the continent’s public health preparedness, the financial institution announced yesterday.

“The World Bank has approved a support program for Africa CDC that will help improve the institution’s technical capacity and strengthen its institutional framework to intensify support to African countries in preparing, detecting, and responding to disease outbreaks and health emergencies. public”, reads the statement released yesterday by the World Bank, quoted by Lusa.

In the text, the Bank explains that “regional approaches to health policies and interventions that complement global and country efforts show the value of a strong Center committed to safeguarding the health of the continent”.

Quoted in the statement, Ahmed Ogwell Ouma, acting director of the Africa CDC, an agency of the African Union, said: “Africa is changing its dynamics on its path towards a New Public Health Order; we see this project – and more importantly , our partnership with the World Bank – as extremely important, especially in the institution’s transition, and we look forward to collaborating with partners to maximize the impact of this crucial investment in securing the continent’s future health.”

The project, the statement reads, will help to promote critical regional capacities to ensure a resilient and prepared continent, through the maintenance of a robust workforce, in addition to strengthening in several areas, such as the hiring of epidemiologists and the increased production of vaccines and medical supplies.
