Africa-Press – Cape verde. The President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, said this Monday, in Mindelo, that it is “fundamental” that children and young people learn the Cape Verdean language and the Portuguese language on parity to also improve performance in other languages.
The head of state showed this position to journalists on the sidelines of the master class that he gave, at Secondary school of José Augusto Pinto, to students who chose the Cape Verdean mother tongue as one of the curricular units of the 10th year of schooling.
For José Maria Neves, it is important to make students realize that the mother tongue is an “important pillar” of Cape Verdean society and that everything must be done to learn, speak and write it correctly.
“We must work so that, on par with the Portuguese language, we can improve our performance in language learning”, he maintained, adding that it is necessary that Creole cease to be just a language of affection and only of informal spaces.
