New National Minimum Wage now in Force

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The General Inspectorate of Labour warned employers, workers and society in general this Monday, the 6th, that the new national minimum wage of 17 thousand escudos for the private sector and 19 thousand escudos for the public sector is already in force.

It should be noted that in August 2024, the meeting of social partners with the government resulted in an agreement to increase the national minimum wage from 15 to 17 thousand escudos in the private sector and to 19 thousand in the Public Service.

On that occasion, Olavo Correia, Minister of Finance, highlighted that the increase in the minimum wage corresponds to an increase of “over 50%” when compared to 2016 and demonstrated openness for it to continue growing.

“We want to reach values of around 20 thousand escudos between 2026 and 2027. After that, companies and the State can think about it. And we will pay above that, if we understand and are able to. Therefore, what we are doing is a substantial improvement in the national minimum wage, indicating that we need to value the wages of those who work.”

The State Budget (OE) for 2025 is worth 98 million contos, with 82.5% of these resources being generated internally. The document was approved by parliament and promulgated by the President of the Republic on 28 December 2024.
