Africa-Press – Cape verde. The re-elected president of the Cape Verde Red Cross (CVCV), Arlindo Soares de Carvalho, said today that the new term will be marked by strengthening the response to climate crises and empowering communities.

The election took place during the institution’s XIII General Elective Assembly, held in Cidade Velha, where Arlindo Carvalho obtained a resounding victory with 96.1% of the votes (49 favorable votes out of 51 registered).

In an interview with Inforpress, Arlindo de Carvalho stated that this renewal of his mandate reflects the “recognition of the work done,” but also the confidence placed by volunteers and partners in the team’s ability to do “more and better.”

“More than a mandate, we understand that the votes cast for us and our team reflect, on the one hand, the recognition of the work done, the results achieved, but also the confidence that we can do more and better,” he said.

As a priority for this term, he highlighted strengthening the response to climate crises, transforming the Red Cross into an institution that works in anticipation, preparing people and communities, strengthening its structures, and training and empowering its volunteer corps.

Another priority pointed out by Arlindo de Carvalho is the empowerment of communities, focusing on social action, education, inclusion, and poverty reduction.

“The Red Cross must be a strong, sustainable, and resilient institution, capable of helping people. I believe that with this attitude we can also mobilize other institutions and wills, and have a more effective framework for agreements, capable of creating and producing synergy for the common good,” he argued.

He added that the new term also foresees organizational transformation measures, such as strengthening governance, transparency, integrity, and accountability.

Financial sustainability, according to the re-elected president, constitutes one of the central challenges, although he assured that the General Assembly approved a set of measures aimed at diversifying funding sources and strengthening the institution’s asset base. Looking back over the past four years, Arlindo de Carvalho gave a “broadly positive” assessment, noting that the institution was tested by climatic events and the persistence of situations of social vulnerability.

“The Red Cross was challenged. We managed to rise to the occasion, fulfilling our humanitarian mission and acting as auxiliaries to public safety in the social field,” the president argued, emphasizing that the results of this work are visible and recognized by Cape Verdean society.

The election of Fernando Pereira Tavares to the position of vice-president completes the senior structure of the CVCV for the 2026-2030 term.
