Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Tarrafal City Council is carrying out a series of activities to celebrate Africa Day, highlighting the continent’s cultural wealth and history presented in different formats and styles.
Celebrated on 25 May, the Tarrafal City Council kicked off a week of celebrations to mark the day on Tuesday 20th, under the theme “Africa in the Present and Future: Paths of Unity, Innovation and Hope”, to celebrate the continent’s cultural diversity.
According to the coordinator of Tourism, Cooperation and Communities at the city council, Amarílis Martins, an exhibition entitled “Tributes to African Leaders” is currently being set up in the town hall’s courtyard, featuring twelve paintings depicting “emblematic” African figures, such as Amílcar Cabral, Nelson Mandela, Titina Silá and Lilica Boal, among others.
This initiative, as she highlighted, seeks to recognize the leaders who contributed to African development, strengthen the bonds of union between the communities living in the municipality, and recognize and honor the leaders who marked the history of the continent, driving the progress of their countries and Africa as a whole.
In addition to the exhibition, the calendar includes conferences, gastronomic presentations, music and dance, to promote integration and pride in African heritage.
As highlights of this week, this official highlighted the 24th, when in addition to the gastronomic and craft fair, a conference will be held on the theme “Africa in the past, and the perspectives of the future”, in which they expect to have representation from the High Authority for Immigration in Cape Verde, as well as the Embassies of Senegal and Guinea-Bissau.
According to the mayor, the municipality is home to a significant community of immigrants from various regions of Africa, especially Senegal and Guinea-Bissau, and with these activities, the municipality intends to reinforce its commitment to the integration of African peoples in Tarrafal.
To close the week, the aim is to “demonstrate the spirit of unity” with a march through the streets of Tarrafal, to “highlight” the municipality’s openness to African immigrants and to strengthen support for issues of unity on the continent.
