Africa-Press – Cape verde. The song “Independance”, by Mário Lúcio, from the album of the same name, released in January, in Paris (France), leads the Top 10 of best global songs, in the ranking of the English magazine Songlines, in this month’s edition of May.
According to a note sent by the musician’s press office to Inforpress, the magazine highlights the musician’s tribute to the 50 years of Cape Verde’s independence, through an album that reflects the “diversity of his influences” from West Africa, Portugal and the Caribbean.
Furthermore, he added, the magazine says that Mário Lúcio rescues these musical memories and creates new compositions in the styles of that time, “intertwining elements of afrobeat, soukouss and rumba.”
“The play on words between independence and dance, which refers to the dance tunes of the time, conveys the festive tone and the ‘groove’ of the album, referred to as a happy combination between the soft vocal tones, the relaxed melody and the vibrant instruments that are interspersed with archival recordings”, highlighted the same note.
According to the musician’s press office, “Independance” has been “widely publicized in several performances” by Mário Lúcio on national and international stages, the most recent being the Gamboa Festival, on the 17th of this month of May.
He also added that Mário Lúcio is also referred to by the English magazine as “one of the most prolific and celebrated Cape Verdean musicians of today”.
Furthermore, the same source stressed, the musician has received “praise in other international media headlines” and from various personalities who “praise the album”.
