Parliament: Deputies from Three Parties Highlight Challenges and Gains for the Municipality of Praia in Recent Years

Africa-Press – Cape verde. Deputies from the three parties (UCID, PAICV, MpD) highlighted Praia’s challenges and gains in recent years, considering that the municipality deserves “more attention and joint efforts” from everyone to achieve its growth.

UCID deputy Zilda Oliveira congratulated the municipality on its day and said she understands that this day should be seen as a day of reflection on problems, challenges and projection of the future with a view to its planned, orderly, sustainable and inclusive development.

He said that the municipality faces “enormous” challenges, in terms of unemployment, basic sanitation and health, access to decent housing, insecurity, urban land management planning, poverty, growing social inequality in terms of employment opportunities, income and living conditions.

“The current state of the municipality is the responsibility of both the local and central government and all the people of Praia,” he said, emphasizing that everyone must come together to solve the problems in this municipality.

In turn, MpD deputy Luís Carlos Silva declared that Praia is “abandoned”, with works stopped and infrastructure with a high degree of degradation, potholed and congested roads.

“Praia faces many challenges, in terms of transport, sports, infrastructure, housing, green spaces and leisure”, he pointed out, emphasizing that a new vision and capacity to work is needed for Praia.

“Praia was the victim of a political strategy that does not have Praia as its ultimate goal,” he concluded.

PAICV deputy Janira Hopffer Almada contradicted the MpD deputy and clarified that the municipality has already carried out several works for this municipality, among other projects with results.

She mentioned rehabilitation works on Sucupira square, the asphalting of the citadel, the integrated rehabilitation of the Calabaceira area, the construction of viewpoints and pedestrian walkways in various areas, the rehabilitation of fields and multipurpose areas and the connection of domestic water in homes.

He also highlighted the construction of toilets for vulnerable people and rehabilitation of housing and support for artists.
