On the radio, Teresa Pinto stood out with her report on gender-based violence (GBV) in Santo Antão. In an interview with Expresso das Ilhas, the journalist highlighted that this award represents an incentive to address more issues related to women, such as female empowerment and women’s health.

“I thank the Merck Foundation for valuing the role of journalists as agents of transformation in society,” praised Teresa Pinto.

In the Multimedia category, Ângelo Vaz was awarded for his work “What leads girls to drop out of school in Cape Verde”. He also mentioned the difficulties he faces as a freelancer, especially with regard to equipment, distances, and internet instability.

The Merck Foundation Journalism Award aims to recognize and value the work of media professionals who address issues relevant to health, gender equality and women’s rights.

The initiative is promoted in partnership with the First Lady of Cape Verde and the Trade Union Association of Journalists of Cape Verde (AJOC).
