Fogo Conference Calls for Ocean Knowledge and Preservation

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The 4th Ocean Decade Conference, promoted by the Presidency of the Republic under the motto “Uniting knowledge, protecting the seas: ocean science for all,” begins today in the city of São Filipe.

The conference, which will bring together approximately two hundred participants, both national and international, will last two days and follows a week of pre-events with activities decentralized across the four municipalities of the Fogo/Brava region.

The opening session will be presided over by the President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, who arrived on Fogo Island late Thursday afternoon. Present at the ceremony will also be the Mayor of São Filipe and the Mayor of the National Association of Municipalities of Fogo and Brava, Nuías Silva, and the Resident Representative of the United Nations System in Cape Verde, Patrícia Portela de Sousa.

The inaugural conference, themed “The Future of the Oceans: Knowledge, Open Science, and Global Cooperation for Sustainability,” will be delivered by Ibukun Adewumi, Director of the Secretariat of the UNESCO/IOC Sub-Commission for Africa and Adjacent Island States (IOC/AFRICA).

The conference is structured around five thematic panels, which aim to promote scientific collaboration and ocean literacy, and consolidate Cabo Verde’s role as a country committed to sustainable ocean governance.

Topics to be discussed include “Access to Ocean Knowledge and Data – Challenges of Open Science,” “Science Meets Society – Examples of International Cooperation Meeting Local Needs/Results of Scientific Expeditions 2025,” and “Coastal Futures – Responsible and Inclusive Governance for Sustainable Marine Fisheries – Knowledge, Transparency, Participation, and Innovation with and for All.”

The panels also include “Sharing Good Practices – Real Cases” and “Strategic Insights and Policy Trends: Transforming Coastal and Marine Governance – From Vision to Action.”

The 4th Ocean Decade Conference is more than a scientific meeting; it is a space for convergence between science, public policy, and citizenship, with the aim of reinforcing Cape Verde’s commitment to the preservation of marine ecosystems and the appreciation of the ocean as a common heritage of humanity.
