Africa-Press – Cape verde. Cheese producers from the Northern Plateau region, in the municipality of Porto Novo, today highlighted the importance of the cheese fair for the region’s cheese production, an event taking place on November 15th.
Speaking to Inforpress, the producers expressed great anticipation for the fair, which, in their view, will serve to promote the fresh and cured cheese produced in the Northern Plateau, which has already been present at other fairs in the archipelago.
In fact, the fresh cheese has already been featured several times at international fairs promoted by the Slow Food Foundation, based in Italy, which highlighted the Northern Plateau cheese as “one of the best in the world”.
Maduino Lima, one of the Northern Plateau cheese producers interviewed by Inforpress, confidently stated that the cheese fair, which also includes sweets and liqueurs produced in the Northern Plateau, will contribute to further promoting this product.
This fair, held as part of the “Sun of the Northern Plateau – Energy for All” project, promoted by the Association for the Defense of the Heritage of Mértola, Portugal, aims to introduce visitors to the “knowledge and flavors” of the Topo de Coroa Natural Park in the Northern Plateau.
This initiative also involves the cheese producers’ cooperative, the Topo de Coroa Community Development Association, the Luz Verde do Norte association, the Porto Novo City Council, and delegations from the Ministries of Agriculture and Education.
Funding is provided by Camões, Institute for Cooperation and Language.
The fresh cheese produced in the Northern Plateau has held the title of World Heritage of Taste since 2007, granted by the Slow Food Foundation, which in 2017 awarded this same cheese the “Slow Cheese Award,” classifying it among the five best cheeses in the world.
Producers are now focusing on certifying this product for export abroad.
