Africa-Press – Cape verde. The new president of the Management Committee of the Cape Verdean Basketball Federation (FCBB), José Semedo, sworn in this Saturday in Praia, assumed the mission of restoring the credibility of the sport and preparing the national team for qualification for the World Cup.
“Basketball is in a difficult phase. Our goal now is to ensure that the players and coaching staff focus on preparing for the games, while the committee takes care of the logistics and conditions of participation,” said Semedo at the end of the FCBB’s extraordinary general assembly.
The session served, among other things, to dismiss the current governing bodies, present the accounts relating to the FCBB’s Afrobasket 2025, and elect a Management Committee that will oversee the federation’s affairs for up to six months.
The director highlighted recent problems such as the failure to hold the national championships in the senior and under-18 categories, which generated “strong discontent” among regional associations, and organizational failures during the last Afrobasket in Angola, which led some athletes to express their unavailability for future commitments.
Semedo also commented on the absence of the outgoing board in presenting the accounts, stating that it is the responsibility of the former leadership to account for the public money received.
“I believe that, at some point, they will present the accounts. Probably due to a lack of organization they haven’t done so yet, but I hope they will,” he stated.
The Management Committee assumes the position with the commitment to guarantee Cape Verde’s participation in the World Cup qualifiers in November in Tunisia, to restore the confidence of players, coaches and clubs, and to prepare the groundwork for future elections.
“We have already initiated contact with the players, and they have shown themselves willing to return. We believe that, even with the short time, we will be successful in this phase,” concluded José Semedo.
