Inauguration of North Bay Photovoltaic Plant in São Vicente

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The photovoltaic power plant in Norte da Baía/Salamansa, São Vicente, will be inaugurated on Saturday, the 22nd, and should allow “more than 40 percent (%) of electricity” to be produced through renewable energy, the government guaranteed today.

The works on the infrastructure, located in Norte da Baía, near the stretch of road that connects Baía to Salamansa, began in April 2024, and during a visit to the site at that time, the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Energy, Alexandre Monteiro, guaranteed that after its completion it would be possible for “more than 40% of electricity” to be produced through renewable energy.

According to the same source, it is a five-megawatt solar park that will produce a volume of energy exceeding 15 percent (%) of the energy consumption on the island of São Vicente.

Initially, the projected completion date was December 2024, with the intention of injecting energy into the grid from January 2025 at a price of five escudos per kilowatt-hour, which, according to Alexandre Monteiro, is “much lower” than the current cost of electricity production using fossil fuels, currently four to five times higher.

The photovoltaic park is now a reality and is the result of an international tender open to national companies, won by Águas de Ponta Preta (APP), in partnership with a Spanish subsidiary, Impulso Solar.

The project is budgeted at 450 million escudos, financed through a bond issue on the stock exchange, in green bonds, placed on the market by the Cabo Verdean Business Bank (BCN).

After becoming operational, the head of APP affirmed, it should avoid carbon emissions and be integrated into the carbon credit market, something that, he stressed, was already being worked on with the Golden Standard.
