Africa-Press – Cape verde. The capital and Cidade Velha, on the island of Santiago, will host, from December 1st to 7th, the first edition of the International Festival of Africanities, Kriolu Culture and Afro-Kriolu Cities – FIACK. The project aims to connect around 50 Afro-Kriolu cities spread across the world, with its headquarters in Cidade Velha and Praia.
In a note sent to this online newspaper, the event’s organizers state that FIACK – the International Festival of Africanities, Kriolu Culture and Afro-Kriolu Cities – presents itself as an innovative, postmodern and avant-garde cultural concept, which aspires to establish a new identity for cosmopolitan citizens influenced by an intense history and profound changes in contemporary lifestyles.
“Conceived in 2008 in Angola, the project aims to connect around 50 Afro-Kriolu cities scattered around the world, with its headquarters in Cidade Velha and Praia, two fundamental historical and cultural centers in the formation of modern Afro-Kriolu identity,” the note adds.
According to the aforementioned source, FIACK is based on a comprehensive vision that integrates various dimensions of cultural and social life, including art, music, fashion, gastronomy, literature, leisure, tourism, the environment, architecture, interculturality, peace, and spirituality. The festival, it continues, seeks to value and promote African and Afro-Kriolu heritage, functioning as an instrument of celebration, education, cultural recovery, and empowerment of communities.
“Assuming Cidade Velha as the first Afro-Kriolu City in the World – a World Heritage Site and cradle of modern Afro-Kriolu identity – the festival also highlights Praia as the second Afro-Kriolu city in Cape Verde.” Both assume a central role in constructing a global cultural narrative that FIACK aims to project internationally,” the organization argues.
It highlights that the initiative has been recognized for its transformative potential in the Cape Verdean cultural landscape, gathering support from the Ribeira Grande de Santiago Municipal Council, the Ministry of Culture and Creative Industries, and the Praia Municipal Council. “These entities emphasize the importance of the festival as a cultural product that transcends entertainment, establishing itself as a platform for identity enhancement, cultural dynamism, and international affirmation,” concludes the source from this newspaper.
