Africa-Press – Cape verde. Cape Verdean international basketball giant Edy Tavares, the best defender in Europe playing for Real Madrid, will miss the first qualifying window for the 2027 World Cup, which begins this Thursday in Tunisia.
According to information given to Inforpress by the Management Committee of the Cape Verdean Basketball Federation (FCBB), the Cape Verdean team left today for Tunis, where, starting on the 27th, they will compete in the first qualifying window for the FIBA 2027 World Basketball Championship, which will take place between November 27th and 30th, 2025.
In this phase, the national team will face the teams from Cameroon, South Sudan, and Libya.
The coaching staff left Praia for Tunis via Casablanca (Morocco), while the players traveled from Madrid, Porto, and Lisbon, with a stopover in Paris.
From the list of selected players, Edy Tavares, a renowned figure in African and European basketball, joins João Embalo and Diego Tavares on the list of unavailable players.
Cape Verde thus has 10 registered players: Anderson Gomes, Anim Delgado, Davide Buccilli, Flávio Fonseca, Ivan Almeida, Joel Almeida, Michel Kenneti Mendes, Patrick Lima, Roesley Mendes, and William Brito.
