Africa-Press – Cape verde. The President of the Republic highlighted on Wednesday the progress made in the health sector on the island of Maio, but acknowledged shortcomings, particularly the need to strengthen human resources and improve the patient transfer system.
In statements to the press, on the second day of the “Presidency on the Island” initiative, José Maria Neves said he was “very impressed” with the Maio Health Center, emphasizing that the infrastructure is “well-equipped,” although challenges remain.
“We have challenges related to human resources, the management and maintenance of hospital equipment, and especially evacuations, which we will have to resolve in the coming times,” he said.
The Head of State stressed that at the national level there has been a “strong investment” in the health and education sectors, reinforcing the fulfillment of fundamental rights.
“If we visit our health centers and hospitals, we see an enormous effort to modernize services, equip units, and strengthen teams. Even so, it is clear that we have a long way to go,” he observed.
The island of Maio currently has two general practitioners and nine nurses, but still lacks specialized technicians in the areas of Stomatology, Imaging, and Physiotherapy, “essential to guarantee a complete response” to the needs of the population.
The Maio edition of the “Presidency on the Island” initiative focuses on the axes of Fundamental Rights, Institutional Stability, and Inclusive Growth, promoting contacts with the population and different local institutions.
This afternoon, the President of the Republic has scheduled meetings in the towns of Figueira and Barreiro and, at the end of the day, will meet with the Maio Regional Football Association to assess the island’s sporting situation.
