São Vicente Committee Analyzes Traffic Weaknesses

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Road Traffic and Transit Committee of the São Vicente Municipal Assembly is meeting today to analyze the weaknesses and strengths of traffic and present solutions to the council for improving road circulation in Mindelo.

In statements to Inforpress, the president of the Territorial Planning, Road Traffic and Transit Committee, Nilton César Medina, explained that the meeting includes representatives from the Directorate-General for Road Transport (DGTR), the National Police (PN), the Municipal Police (PM), public passenger transport companies, driving schools and other authorities.

The objective, he added, is to gather input, update the road situation in São Vicente and produce a report with solutions for improving road circulation in the city of Mindelo.

“We are a commission composed of the three representative forces of the people in the Municipal Assembly – the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV), the Cape Verdean Union for Independence and Democracy (UCID), and the Movement for Democracy (MpD). Our objective is to present solutions and measures to improve road traffic in São Vicente, so that there is more discipline,” he stated.

The elected municipal official says he has observed that, due to a lack of enforcement, there has been an increase in road indiscipline in São Vicente, namely, cars stopping and parking in prohibited places, parallel parking, and buses parking anywhere, hindering road traffic.

“For the meeting, we will bring images to the transport sector and the police of situations that clearly reflect the indiscipline in traffic in São Vicente,” the same source stated, adding that one of the solutions to be presented to the São Vicente Municipal Council will be the installation of a traffic light system in the city of Mindelo, considering the increase in the number of cars on the island.

When questioned about the inclusion of the São Vicente Taxi Drivers Association in the aforementioned meeting, the same source said that the commission intends to hold a separate meeting later, as it is a group with its own specific characteristics.

“We will hold a meeting solely with the association to discuss the issue of licenses, the number of taxis, whether there are shortages, and whether new licenses are needed. In other words, so that we can work towards an ever-improving São Vicente and support the council in resolving these problems that afflict the people of Mindelo and our city in terms of road traffic,” he added.
