Parliament Approves Statute for Creative Arts Professionals

Africa-Press – Cape verde. On Wednesday, the Parliament unanimously approved, in general terms, the bill establishing the Statute of the Creative and Cultural Arts Professional, which sets out the requirements for entering the artistic profession.

A total of 56 MPs were present for the vote: 32 from the ruling Movement for Democracy (MpD), 21 from the African Party for the Independence of Cabo Verde (PAICV), and three from the opposition Democratic and Independent Cape Verdean Union (UCID).

In the party’s voting statement, PAICV MP Josina Freitas said the caucus voted in favour because it recognises the “urgent need” for the country to adopt a special statute for artists.

“Our favourable vote,” she stressed, does not ignore the weaknesses and “real risks” identified during the debate. She highlighted the need to establish a “special contribution scheme” for artists within the social security system.
