Africa-Press – Cape verde. The representative of the Cape Verdean Institute for Children and Adolescents (ICCA) in Tarrafal stated on Monday that the presence of children on the streets until late at night has been a constant concern for the institution.
In an interview with Inforpress, Maria Silva said that this situation has been the target of ICCA interventions, given the risks to which children are exposed when they remain on the streets at night.
In this context, she said that the institution carried out an awareness campaign in the Alto Fontainhas region to publicize the ICCA’s mission and disseminate information about ongoing projects, especially the “Protect” campaign, which reinforces the importance of protecting and promoting the rights of children and adolescents.
The ICCA representative also referred to the need for families to be aware of their real role in protecting childhood and youth, highlighting the collaborative work that must be done to safeguard the rights of children and adolescents.
The same source stressed that the role of the family is fundamental and that the ICCA cannot be present in people’s homes.
“If they fail to fulfill their duties, psychological and emotional deficiencies may arise in children and adolescents,” she emphasized.
Maria Silva also considered that, as an institution that promotes the rights of children and adolescents, they have a role to play in acting effectively, by referring cases to the competent authorities and also by carrying out awareness campaigns in the communities.
