Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Minister of Justice, Joana Rosa, said this Wednesday that the delivery of certificates and kits to young people is a structured intervention to combat the social exclusion of young people from the peripheries who lack vocational training.
These statements were made to journalists during the delivery of certificates and training kits to 29 young people who completed courses in plastering and plumbing, within the scope of the “Ami ê di Paz y Bô” Project (I am for peace, and you?), an initiative of the Ministry of Justice.
According to the minister, the project was designed to address the reality of many young people where the lack of employment leads them to turn to crime in the neighborhoods.
“When we developed this project, we started from the premise that we would be working with young people to create an environment of peace in the communities, but above all, through the empowerment of these young people,” she emphasized.
According to the same source, the program focuses on vocational training in various areas, from drywall and plumbing to electricity and information and communication technologies.
Currently, according to the authorities, there are hundreds of young people in driver and machine operator training programs.
“Today, these young people who are finishing their training are already qualified for the job market and will receive a kit and will benefit from support in the process of entering the job market through self-employment,” concluded the minister.
In turn, the resident representative of UNDP, UNFPA and UNICEF in Cape Verde, David Matern, representing the project’s funder, expressed satisfaction with the results so far, stressing the importance of including young people in the job market.
“We need to invest in prevention, to help young people who are outside of crime, outside the judicial system, and the project is clearly achieving this objective,” emphasized David Matern.
Regarding the amount invested in the project, the resident representative said that, last year alone, four million escudos were invested in this project and that the city of Praia is part of a general engagement for Cape Verdean youth.
Joceline Varela, a graduate of the hydraulics course, expressed satisfaction with this opportunity and high expectations for entering the job market.
Jailson Pina, a graduate in the field of platform engineering, said he is prepared for the job market and that his goal now is to seek funding and create his own team to be ready for the market.
