Boa Vista Launches $2.5 Million Circular Economy Program

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The island of Boa Vista will host, next Friday, the 20th, the official launch of the Joint Circular Economy Program, a strategic initiative budgeted at 2.5 million dollars, aimed at promoting sustainability and waste management.

The event, organized by the municipality, will take place in the Conference Room of the VOI Hotel, in Praia de Chaves, marking the beginning of a three-year project financed by the Joint Fund for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The program is implemented by United Nations agencies, such as UNIDO, UNEP and UN-Habitat, in partnership with the Government of Cape Verde and the Municipality of Boa Vista. According to the organization’s press release, the central objective is to promote the adoption of circular economy principles and consolidate a sustainable tourism model on the island.

The initiative arises as a response to the structural challenges in solid waste management, at a time when Boa Vista is experiencing strong growth in tourism activity.

The implementation strategy is based on two fundamental pillars: the creation of a mixed company, with municipal leadership and private management, to manage the waste infrastructure, and the operationalization of the Boa Vista Tourism Sustainability Pact, aiming to commit tourism operators and public entities to responsible environmental practices.

In addition to the environmental component, the program focuses on the socio-economic aspect through the creation of “green jobs,” the training of professionals in the sector, and the strengthening of the municipality’s own revenue collection.

The launch ceremony, which takes place between 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM this Friday, also aims to foster dialogue between key stakeholders to ensure that the solutions implemented reflect the local needs and opportunities of the “island of dunes.”
