Africa-Press – Cape verde. The delegate of the Organization of Women of Cape Verde (OMCV) in São Vicente today called on young people to take on the organization’s continuity, reinforcing its role in promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment.
Fátima Balbina Lima was speaking to the press in Mindelo, as part of the celebrations of the organization’s 45th anniversary, which gave rise to the establishment of Cape Verdean Women’s Day, celebrated today.
The delegate highlighted the trajectory built over more than four decades, marked by “stories and achievements,” with the mobilization of various partners, some of whom she met with today in a round table discussion.
According to the delegate, the OMCV has relied on the support of institutional and financial partners, essential for the organization’s functioning, given its limited resources.
In this sense, she considered that the date should serve to strengthen existing ties, identify weaknesses, and make partnerships more effective.
“This is an important moment to ask our partners to reinforce their support, to understand where we have failed, and to find ways to ensure a more effective partnership,” said Fátima Lima, who believes that without this support the organization would not be able to develop its actions.
The official also said that she does not intend to renew her mandate as head of the delegation, but guaranteed that she will remain connected to the organization as a member and argued that it is time for the youth to assume leadership and continue the work done.
The delegate stressed that the OMCV has played “a decisive role” in transforming the role of Cape Verdean women since independence, allowing them to be represented in different spheres of society today.
However, she acknowledged that challenges persist, especially in terms of raising awareness about gender equality.
“We have already done a lot, but there is still much to do,” she emphasized.
Therefore, she urged, there must be greater intervention from institutions, namely education and family, in promoting values of equality from childhood.
The official also highlighted the need to involve more men in the organization’s activities, since “changing mindsets requires the contribution of the whole society.”
Fátima Balbina concluded with an appeal for a “more practical and committed” approach, with gender equality translating into “concrete actions and not just speeches.”
