Porto Novo Mayor: Conference to Boost SDG Progress

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Mayor of Porto Novo stated on Thursday, March 26th, that the conference on Women and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will contribute to accelerating the achievement of these goals in the municipality.

João Fonseca, who closed the conference promoted by the Porto Novo City Hall as part of the “March – Women’s Month” celebrations, acknowledged that “important themes” were addressed at this event that will serve to “accelerate the achievement of the SDGs.”

Globally, the mayor said that there has been progress in the implementation of the SDGs, but that “many of these goals are yet to be met.”

“Poverty persists, not everyone has access to quality health and education, there is a lack of guaranteeing water sustainability, there is no decent, full and productive employment for all, and there is a lack of reduction in inequality within and between countries,” observed the President of the Porto Novo Municipal Assembly.

The same source also stated that achieving this agenda, which is global, will only be possible with the participation and action of organized civil society, creating spaces for reflection and knowledge sharing, promoting an inclusive and participatory dialogue among all stakeholders.

This is an issue that involves local authorities, the Government, the National Assembly, and the Presidency of the Republic, she concluded.

The conference addressed the role of women in the implementation of the SDGs in the municipality of Porto Novo and in Cape Verde. The event was attended by the resident coordinator of the United Nations System in Cape Verde, Patrícia de Souza, who reported that the contribution of women in this municipality to the implementation of these objectives is “visible.”

“In the context of Porto Novo and Santo Antão, the contribution of women is visible in food security and adaptation to climate change,” observed Patrícia de Souza.

The diplomat highlighted the fact that there are already some innovations in the municipality that should be taken into consideration, emphasizing the work in restoring land for sustainable agricultural production.

The program of celebrations for “March – Women’s Month” in Porto Novo concludes today with a gala honoring women.
