Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Minister of Justice, Joana Rosa, highlighted today the role of social reintegration and emotional support for incarcerated women, advocating for greater prevention of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and strengthening social inclusion in prisons.
The minister made these statements to the press on the sidelines of the closing ceremony of Women’s Month activities held at the Praia Central Prison, stating that the annual visit to the prison aims to provide emotional support and reinforce the hope of social reintegration.
“These women, here in prison, always deserve special attention, even because of the type of crime and the remorse they show when we are near them,” she said.
The minister also emphasized that, despite representing a smaller number compared to men, female prisoners show a greater capacity for reintegration and that, normally, the recidivism rate is zero, “which shows that they are able to serve their sentence and internalize the mistake committed.”
During the visit, the governor stated that she had witnessed the emotional suffering of the female detainees, many of whom were separated from their children and families, and advocated for the need to strengthen support and reintegration actions.
“Nothing is better, in this Women’s Month, than to bring hope, affection, and contribute to the reintegration and recovery of these people,” she emphasized.
Regarding Gender-Based Violence (GBV), the minister considered it a cross-cutting challenge that requires greater prevention and societal involvement, also highlighting factors such as alcohol and drug use, frequently associated with conflict-ridden family environments.
She also defended female empowerment and the fight against inequalities, stressing that women should live without fear and with the freedom to decide about their lives.
In turn, the director of the Praia Central Penitentiary, Odair Pedro, highlighted the institution’s commitment to the humanization of the prison system and the social reintegration of female inmates.
“This moment symbolizes our commitment to human dignity and to creating opportunities for a more solid and dignified social reintegration,” he said.
The manager also emphasized that the activities carried out included training programs, talent demonstrations, and cultural initiatives, aiming to value the potential and resilience of the female inmates.
The event marked the closing of the Women’s Month activities at the institution, focusing on valuing Cape Verdean women and promoting social inclusion within the prison context.
