Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Government considered the Tarrafal Concentration Camp “very significant” for the history of Cabo Verde, for the construction of the Cabo Verdean identity in the post-independence and the independent Republic of Cabo Verde itself.
The Minister of Culture and Creative Industries expressed this position at the end of the bilateral meeting with his counterpart from Portugal, Pedro Adão e Silva, at the Government Palace, where he stressed that the candidacy for world heritage will only be delivered to UNESCO after 2024, in view of the suspension of applications to places of memory linked to totalitarian regimes.
The Minister made a point of stressing the extent of the Tarrafal Concentration Camp, pointing out that the number of Cabo Verdeans in this prison, also known as slow death prison, was smaller, so he believes it is necessary to involve countries such as Guinea Bissau, Angola and Portugal.
Cabo Verde, as part of the Africa Group, made it clear, it endorsed with UNESCO the need for a negotiation in terms of justice between countries that have seen much of their cultural estate taken from their territories returned to their museums for a complete refund of their identities.
