Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Commander of the National Guard, Mário Vaz Furtado, defended, Saturday, 25, that the Cape Verdean marines have a “fundamental role” in the strategy of defense of the national territory.
“Our marines must be prepared and able to respond promptly to a wide range of missions”, warned Mário Vaz Furtado, at the ceremony for the imposition of berets on 39 marines of the 43rd Marine Corps Training Course, held at the Command of the Third Military Region, Barracks of Achada Limpa, in Praia.
The insularity, the dispersion of the islands and a maritime dimension greater than that of land, are factors that, according to the Commander of the National Guard, make the marines “preponderant in the defense strategy of Cape Verde” throughout its extension.
Furtado also acknowledged that the Cape Verdean marines have been able to “carefully” carry out the missions assigned to them, reacting promptly and effectively when called upon to fulfill their duties.
He also highlighted the contribution that the marines have given to the Armed Forces, as they are, as he noted, “always the first to participate in different missions”.
Asset for the defense of the country
Commander Mário Furtado defended the need to create specific conditions, especially in terms of equipment and armaments, since the fact that the marines constitute an operational unit with capacity and competence, represent an “trump in the field of defense of the country”.
On the other hand, he recalled that the Armed Forces are at a time when training and qualification are of great importance, as it is the only way to maintain the capacity to respond to the challenges that are increasingly demanding.
“The training and dignification of the man who fulfills his obligations in our institution has guided our action, a goal for which we fight”, he stressed.Dignify the traditions of the marines
The National Guard Commander also urged newly formed Marines to dignify the berets received and the traditions of the Armed Forces.
“Follow and enforce the laws and regulations, cultivate discipline, be brave and courageous marines and proud to belong to the Armed Forces of Cape Verde”, he urged.
