Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Muslim community in Cape Verde, celebrates this Sunday, July 10, the feast of sheep sacrifice, called “Tabaski”. The cult, which lasts for three days, runs until Tuesday, 12, with prayers and gestures of solidarity, namely the distribution of mutton to families.
Muslims around the world are in a festive mood celebrating “Tabaski”, the day they renew their connection with their prophet, celebrating family and solidarity with others.
In Cape Verde, in the city of Praia, the opening of this event that marks the end of Ramadan, is scheduled for this Sunday, 10, from 10 am, according to Imam Neka Thian of the Tira-Chapéu Mosque.
Solidarity
“On this day, we gather to pray and, in addition, we make sacrifices of sheep in which we divide the meat into three parts: one to eat, another to give to the poorest and the rest that we keep for other occasions”, explained to this weekly, the Cape Verde’s Islamic spiritual leader.
Imam Neka Thian said that despite the current crisis, the Muslim community cannot let Tabaski go unnoticed. Thus, each Muslim family must take a sheep to be sacrificed and distributed in the Terra Branca area.
Meaning of Tabaski
It should be noted that Tabaski is celebrated from the tenth day of the month of “Dhu al-Hijah” (last month of the lunar year in the Islamic calendar), by Muslims from all over the planet, in memory of the prophet Ibrahim, who 100 years ago, according to his followers, instead of sacrificing one of his two sons, “God sent him a ram to use in their place”.
On that day when the faithful renew their connection with their prophet, celebrating family and solidarity with others, they sacrifice sheep and divide them into three parts, one to eat, another to give to the poorest and the rest to keep for others. occasions.
This custom arrived in Cape Verde in 1990 with the installation of the first Mosque for Muslims in the city of Praia. However, they currently celebrate this festival all over the country’s islands.
