Minister of Justice Unveils New Forensic Lab Equipment

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Minister of Justice announced this Wednesday the acquisition of new laboratory equipment for the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences (INMLCF) aimed at addressing technical deficiencies and strengthening its capacity to respond to the administration of justice.

In statements to the press after a visit to the institute’s facilities in Praia, Joana Rosa explained that the objective was to learn about the functioning of the institution, created in 2023, which is in a phased implementation process planned for ten years.

The minister highlighted that, in the short term, priority is given to the area of forensic thanatology (performing autopsies), followed by the installation of the Biology laboratory and other necessary facilities for the full functioning of forensic expertise in the country.

“We are working on the installation of various laboratories and equipment for laboratory tests. With the acquisition of this equipment, we will contribute to improving the institute’s mission,” stated the minister, emphasizing that this development will be completed “soon”.

Legal Medicine, Joana Rosa reminded, plays a “fundamental and irreplaceable” role in justice, from performing autopsies and physical examinations to investigating sexual assault crimes and paternity tests.

“It is a very defined, clear mission that ends up being fundamental in the very administration of justice,” she stated.

During the visit, preparations for the International Congress of Legal Medicine, which Cape Verde will host on March 10th and 11th, were also discussed.

The event gains relevance due to the fact that the current president of the Cape Verdean institute also leads the Network of Medical-Legal and Forensic Services of Portuguese Language (RSMLFLP).

Despite acknowledging the current constraints in terms of technical resources, the Minister of Justice reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening laboratory resources to ensure that criminal investigations and scientific evidence are faster and more effective.
