Farmers in Vale da Ribeira Grande, in Ribeira Grande de Santiago, now have a Photovoltaic Solar Park to supply electricity to the pumping system of the Furo FST-827, a water storage reservoir and a distribution network. of water for the irrigation of 18 agricultural plots.
The initiative was carried out by Associação Cultural, Recreativa e Educativa de Santana (ACRES) which, despite the crisis, has multiplied efforts to improve the living conditions of local farmers, who are the main beneficiaries of the project.
“This project, in addition to helping farmers, managed to generate employment in an extremely difficult and complicated time for women heads of households, who were contemplated in order to obtain their daily bread, at a critical moment in the middle of the of the pandemic”, said Leinilda Pereira, president of ACRES in a statement.
She believes that the arrival of water for agricultural crops was an “authentic manna”, especially in these times of prolonged drought in Cape Verde.

It should be noted that major interventions in the irrigation system, based on the FST-827 borehole, in Vale da Ribeira Grande, Ribeira Grande de Santiago, were financed by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
This ACRES project had the partnership of the National Water and Sanitation Agency (ANAS), Água de Rega (AdR) and the Municipality of Ribeira Grande de Santiago (CMRGS).
