Salif Silva was speaking at a press conference held on Wednesday afternoon in Praia to present the electoral calendar.
“Although these are preliminary figures, we can say that, at this moment, as a result of this campaign, [there are] more than 14 thousand new voters in this last cycle, totaling more than 23 thousand new voters since the last elections”, he stated.
The president of the National Electoral Commission, Maria do Rosário Gonçalves, announced that from 2 October all acts of laying the first stones will be prohibited.
“Public ceremonies of laying the first stones or inaugurations will be prohibited from 2 October. Political propaganda through commercial advertising, whether paid or free, has been prohibited since 2 September and will remain so until the end of the process. Voter registration for the electoral roll will be suspended at midnight on 27 September. This means that citizens who have not yet registered or, if registered, have changed their permanent residence, [can] regularise their respective situations and be ready to vote on 1 December”, he stated.
Candidates for the local elections must submit their candidacy to the district courts between 12 and 22 October, and those who hold the presidency of the city council will have their position suspended from the moment they formally submit their candidacy dossier.
“The electoral campaign, an extremely important event, where political parties and candidates will be promoting their programmes and calling for votes, will begin on 14 November”, he stressed.
Around 350 thousand voters are registered for the local elections on 1 December.
