“We are in a challenging environment related to drought, covid-19 and war, but we are overcoming the challenges.
The message we want to convey to the people of Porto is to have confidence and have good private initiatives to build a municipality of the future, which will be a great centrality”, noted this mayor.
For Aníbal Fonseca, Porto Novo still faces “many challenges”, from the outset, in the field of urban requalification, but also in terms of water supply and sanitation, ensuring, however, that projects are being implemented with a view to solving the problems .
“We have the biggest challenge, which is the local economy. In order to have a healthy, sustainable and attractive municipality, people need to have their own sources of income.
We want to create the conditions for private individuals to be able to invest here in Porto Novo in several areas: tourism, fishing, livestock, agriculture”, explained the mayor.
According to INE data, Porto Novo has 16,052 inhabitants, 90.7% have access to electricity, 78.1% have access to a friend piped from the public network, 10.3% use fountains, 22% use firewood for cooking, 75.4 % have accommodation with bathroom.
To mark the municipality’s 60th anniversary, the Porto Novo City Council created a commemorative stamp and held several events, in addition to the launch and inauguration of some projects linked, namely, to urban requalification and water supply.
On September 2, 1962, through the ministerial legislation, published in the Boletim Oficial de Cabo Verde number 35, the then administrative post of Porto Novo, which was part of the municipality of Paul, was extinguished and the third class municipality of Porto Novo was created.integrating the parishes of São João Baptista and Santo André.
