Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Association for the Defense of the Environment and Development (ADAD) is participating—from the 27th to the 30th of this month—in the 12th West African Coastal and Marine Forum in Mauritania, to share the archipelago’s experiences regarding environmental education in schools.
This information was provided today to Inforpress by the representative of this environmental NGO, Aidil Borges, on the sidelines of activities commemorating Earth Day, held at the 13 de Janeiro School in the city of Praia.
On this occasion, the official highlighted the importance of the Forum—promoted by the Regional Partnership for Coastal and Marine Conservation in West Africa (PRCM)—which brings together countries such as Mauritania, Senegal, Cape Verde, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea-Conakry, and Sierra Leone in defense of nature conservation.
She stated that this edition of the event will be dedicated to ocean health, and ADAD will present an environmental education project focused on tree planting in schools—an initiative the organization has been implementing for several years.
“What we aim to do is, in a sense, revive a practice from the past: the mass planting of trees. This happens to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Cape Verde’s independence, so we are leveraging this context to plant trees throughout schools, on hillsides, and everywhere else,” she explained.
Aidil Borges emphasized that the objective is to engage students in an active learning process, transforming them into agents of change within their communities.
In addition to ADAD, she noted that other national institutions will also be present at the gathering, which brings together leaders and stakeholders from national and international bodies—including intergovernmental and scientific institutions, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and financial partners—in support of the environmental cause. The meeting, taking place from April 27 to 30 in Nouakchott, Mauritania, is considered one of the leading regional forums on environmental conservation, focusing on the blue economy, biodiversity, and the sustainable management of coastal areas.
