Africa-Press – Cape verde. This Saturday, 10th, the University of Mindelo awarded the Degree of Doctor Honoris Causa, posthumously, to the national hero Amílcar Lopes Cabral. The distinction marks the university’s 20th anniversary and is attended by the President of the Republic of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and José Maria Neves, President of the Republic of Cape Verde.
The formal session is scheduled for Saturday, starting at 9 am, at the Onesimo Silveira auditorium, at UniMindelo.
The distinction of Amílcar Cabral happens, according to the note, to immortalize the humanist, visionary, pedagogue and founder of Cape Verdean nationality.
In addition to being one of the main revolutionaries of the 20th century, Amílcar Cabral was also one of the main Marxist and decolonial theorists of the century.
He defended that the liberation of the people would be done through education, because only through education would obstacles to the development of the population be removed.
The distinction marks the 20th anniversary of the University of Mindelo and, among other personalities, is attended by the President of the Republic of Cape Verde, José Maria Neves, his counterpart from Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Commander Pedro Pires, President of Amilcar Cabral Foundation.
