Africa-Press – Cape verde. The sea captain António Duarte Monteiro was appointed today as the new Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces (CEMFA). Name proposed by the Government, the appointment was made by the President of the Republic and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of Cape Verde, José Maria Neves.
Before proceeding with the appointment, the head of state heard, separately, the deputies who are members of the Superior Council for National Defence, the representatives of the three parties with parliamentary seats, Major General Anildo Morais (now ex-CEMFA) and Captain-General himself. do-Mar, António Duarte Monteiro.
“As the Armed Forces are a republican institution, their mission and performance must deserve the broadest consensus in Cape Verdean society, especially among sovereign bodies and between the State and society”, reasoned the head of state.
The appointment of the new CEMFA deserved, according to a note from the presidency of the Republic, broad agreement between all the political forces represented in Parliament.
Profile
Born in São Nicolau, the new CEMFA, who until now served as Executive Member at the Institute for the Prevention and Investigation of Aeronautical and Maritime Accidents, was Captain of the Windward Ports between 2013 and 2020.
Between 2015 and 2021, he also served as President of the National Commission for the Coordination of Search and Rescue, CNCSAR, on an accrual basis.
Throughout his military career, António Duarte Monteiro played important roles in the Armed Forces, as Commander of the Coast Guard between 2009 and 2012, Commander of the Naval Squadron of the Coast Guard Command between 2007 and 2009 and Commander of the Naval Units of the Coast Guard Command between 2006 and 2007.
In 1993, with the creation of the Coast Guard, the first representative of the Naval Units in São Vicente had been designated.
