Africa-Press – Cape verde. The city of Assomada will host today, the 26th, at the Norberto Tavares Cultural Center, the launch of the book “Music as a Vehicle for the Decolonization of the Mind in Post-Independence Cape Verde: The Case of the Compositions of Norberto Tavares”.The book, to be presented by Carlos Alberto Sousa (Princezito), was published by Livraria Pedro Cardoso, and has its origins in the monographic work presented to the University of Santiago, to obtain the title of Degree in History, by Luís Carlos Gonçalves, under the guidance of doctor Filomena Oliveira.
“Music as a Vehicle for the Decolonization of the Mind in Post-Independence Cape Verde: The Case of the Compositions of Norberto Tavares” aims, according to the author in a press release, to understand the dynamics of Cape Verdean society in the post-independence period, in its historical, political and social aspects, based on the messages conveyed by the music of the time.
Norberto Tavares, according to the author, marked an era with his compositions carrying messages of hope in a new world, of freedom, democracy and progress.
Born in Santa Catarina, Luís Carlos says he has been attracted to the compositions of Norberto Tavares since a very young age, not only because of his musical style, but also because of his political and social messages.
Norberto Tavares is considered a reference for artists of different generations and was marked in the history of Cape Verdean music as a precursor of the movement of the 80s that took funaná from the limits of rurality.
