Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Municipality of Praia, in partnership with the Embassy of the Republic of Angola, will today assign the name of António Agostinho Neto to the avenue that runs from the Lém-Ferreira roundabout to the Roundabout on Avenida Cidade de Lisboa.

The unveiling of plaque no1 is scheduled for this morning, at the Lém Ferreira roundabout, by the mayor of Praia City Council, Francisco Carvalho, and by the Ambassador of Angola, Júlia Machado.

The second plaque follows, next to the roundabout of the Centro Social 1o de Maio, followed by interventions by the ambassador of Angola and the mayor of Praia.

The event ends with a cocktail at Paços do Concelho.

Profile

António Agostinho Neto (1922 – 1979) was an Angolan doctor, writer and politician, the main figure of the country in the 20th century.

He was President of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and in 1975 became the first President of Angola, until 1979.

In 1975-1976 he was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize.
