Boa Vista: Bofareira hosts “Morna in the Community” activity in the 6th edition of Morna Week

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The village of Bofareira, located ten kilometres east of the city of Sal Rei, was chosen by the organisers of the 6th edition of Morna Week to host the “Morna na Comunidade” concert on Monday the 23rd.

Speaking to Inforpress, the Director of Culture of Boa Vista City Council, Leidy Barros, said that “Morna na Comunidade” is a simple activity in the Morna Week programme that each year brings a bit of this musical genre to different communities on the island.

According to the same source, this musical moment, which toasts the locals, also promotes exchanges between local artists and other localities.

Those who attended the event, such as the citizen known as Preta, said they enjoyed it and that the tradition of morna, which is from Boa Vista, should not be allowed to die.

Therefore, he summed up, the city council should hold activities of this type more often to encourage young people not to let morna disappear because “the older people who sing morna are dying out”, and so “the tradition should be passed on to children and grandchildren”.

Rolando da Graça, one of the people honored at this year’s Morna Week, sang at the event and considered that for him it is a recognition of what he has done and the “little” he has done throughout his musical life to date, but he has always shared it with people.

He is very happy that people say that the tribute is fair, which means a lot to him.

In addition to Rolando da Graça, this year Erineu Morais and Gabriela Estrela are also being honored, a way of publicly demonstrating appreciation and recognition for the tribute they have paid to the culture of Boa Vista and the country over the years, according to the city council.

The event is organized by the Boa Vista Musicians Association, in partnership with the city council, and includes activities at the Boa Vista Secondary School, concerts in different villages and beaches, workshops for musicians, poetry and serenades.

The event ends on Friday, the 27th, at Praia d’Diante, with the Mornas Festival.
