Africa-Press – Cape verde. Four heads of state have confirmed their presence at the celebration of Cape Verde’s 50th anniversary of independence, which includes an expanded cultural programme with dozens of artists, on Friday and Saturday, the official day of the celebrations.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Sissoco Embaló (Guinea-Bissau), Diomaye Faye (Senegal) and the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, Henrique, confirmed the place, a source linked to the celebrations told Lusa today.

Amina J. Mohammed, deputy secretary-general of the United Nations, is also expected to be present, as is Mozambique’s Prime Minister Maria Benvinda Levy, the source added.

The ceremonial program will be on Saturday, in Praia, and begins at 9 am with the traditional laying of a wreath at the Amílcar Cabral Memorial, followed by a solemn session at the National Assembly.

During the afternoon there will be a parade of security forces and a commemorative session is scheduled for 6 pm with the intervention of all heads of state invited to the celebrations, in front of the Jaime Mota Barracks, in the historic center of the capital.

A parallel program of activities includes, on Friday and Saturday, conferences, exhibitions, film screenings, a gastronomic festival and a book fair, which runs until the 13th.

More than two dozen artists will liven up three stages with shows in the center of the capital on Friday and Saturday nights.

The Government granted a day off on Friday, the eve of Independence Day.

Cape Verde’s independence was declared on July 5, 1975, in a ceremony at the Várzea Stadium, putting an end to the Portuguese colonial regime in the archipelago.
