CAN'2024 in Handball: Cape Verde begins the preparation stage for Egypt today in Portugal

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Cape Verdean senior men’s handball team, runner-up in Africa, is concentrated today, in Portugal, with the 20 pre-selected by coach Jorge Rito, for the preparation stage for CAN’2024, to be played at Egypt.

With clear objectives of positioning itself among the top three places, Cape Verde, according to the technical director of the national federation of the sport, Alberto Correia e Silva, will begin this stage which should run from the 26th to the 30th of this month, to be interrupted at the end of the year in order to be resumed from the 3rd of January until the 16th of this year.

The internship for the 26th edition of CAN will feature 20 pre-selected candidates, with a view to definitively choosing the 17 athletes who will represent the country in the event in the city of Cairo, Egypt, to be held from the 17th to the 27th of this year.

The Cape Verdean Handball Federation, according to director Correia e Silva, is working to ensure that the delegation works smoothly, meaning that it has practically met all the financial conditions for the men’s team to participate in the biggest competition on the African continent. .

Cape Verde, as runner-up in Africa, goes to Egypt with the intention of “trying to do the best” or at least being in the top three places, which gives access to qualification for the Paris’2024 Olympic Games.

Because, “based on the performance of Egypt, ranked seventh in the last senior men’s World Championship, Africa automatically won two places for the Pre-Olympic Games.

In this case, according to the FCA, “if Egypt wins the CAN, Africa will guarantee two places, for the second and third placed in the pre-Olympic qualification”, but if another country wins the title of African champion, that team will qualify directly to the Olympic Games and Egypt, the current African champion, advances to the Olympic qualifiers, in which case Africa will have two additional countries in this qualifying phase.

According to the schedule, the Creole team will debut on January 17th in Group A, against Rwanda, and two days later, on the 19th, they will face their counterpart Zambia, with the third and final game of the Group stage facing its opponent from DR Congo, scheduled for January 21st.

In light of the regulations of the African Handball Confederation, CAH, the top two in each group advance to the next phase.
