Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Minister of Education highlighted this Friday in São Tomé and Príncipe the strengthening of the commitment of the Member States to inclusive, equitable and quality education, having reaffirmed the role of education as a pillar of sustainable development.

Amadeu Cruz defended this position at the 13th Meeting of CPLP Ministers of Education, held in São Tomé and Príncipe, at the meeting that brought together the ministers to discuss common education policies and strengthen cooperation in the Portuguese-speaking world.

According to the information provided on the official website of the Ministry of Education, during his speech, Amadeu Cruz praised the “largely satisfactory results” obtained with the structural reforms implemented in the Cape Verdean education system since 2017.

He also highlighted the new vision of education aligned with the knowledge economy, focused on the mastery of languages, sciences and technologies.

Among the main advances, he mentioned the curricular reform, already completed in Compulsory Basic Education and in the final phase in Secondary Education, which includes the development of new plans and programs, updated school textbooks, a national assessment system and a continuous training plan for teachers.

The minister also highlighted the progress in teacher training, in improving school infrastructure and in inclusion policies, with measures to combat school dropout, reinforce school meals, guarantee safe transport and distribute school materials free of charge or at low cost.

The extension of compulsory schooling up to the 8th grade and the exemption of tuition fees up to the 12th grade were highlighted as structural measures, with a significant impact on the lives of students and families.

Amadeu Cruz also reinforced the importance of cooperation with international organizations such as UNESCO, the United Nations, the World Bank, WFP and FAO, stressing that education should be seen as a collective effort.

During his speech, the representative also addressed topics such as the reform of Technical and Professional Education, Youth and Adult Education, the digital transition, the valorization of the teaching career and the launch of the Support Program for the Reform of the Education Sector in Cape Verde (PAREP-CV).

On the sidelines of the meeting, Cape Verde was also represented at the 15th CPLP Education Focal Points Forum, through the national director of Education, Adriano Moreno.
